Friday
Early morning I got my phone and texted Celina. She’s my best bud in College and she’s part of Edztuh. I met Celina during the school’s acquaintance party. She’s my seat mate, the extrovert gal in class. She would often raise her hand even if she doesn’ know the answer. As I said I was the not-so-popu girl but when she noticed how I turn the school uniform into a fashionable one, she got amazed. She said “Hi Shylle! Can we be friends?” At first, I was thinking that who is this girl? Is she just trying to be a user friendly person? But first impressions don’t last. Celina is one such great friend.
“Hi Celina! You told the rest of Eztuh that I came back already. It’s me Shylle. Okay, here’s my local cell phone number. Hope you save it. See you all tomorrow at Starbucks. My treat!”
It’s 7:00 am. I’ll just fix myself and do my morning routine. Then I’ll go down to eat breakfast.
While going down the stairs, I could already smell pan cakes, smoked sausage, eggs, spam and garlic rice.
Manang Tinia told me that Lyla is not used to eating the Filipino sausage – Tuyo or dried fis which I am really longing to eat. Anyway, I enjoyed breakfast together with a glass of orange juice with pulp bits.
It’s so nice that I don’t get to worry about cooking for breakfast, washing the dishes as well as my clothes, cleaning the house or drving as well. Because in the Sates, I do everything all be myself.
Mom and dad went to Tagaytay. We have a vacation house there which they converted to a paradise for retirees. They haven’t retired but they own a local furniture company which supplies malls over the Philippines.
They went here to visit me 2 days ago. They were asking if I want to stay with them but I said “ I want to feel the ultra violet rays of the sun here in Manila” Well in fact, I am really uber excited to see Landon and Edztuh. Anyhow, I bought mom a Clinique make up set which I believe she’ll enjoy because she asked me to bring her this new thing which eliminates wrinkles in 24 hours. For dad, I bought him an Oakley shades which was also used by Cyclopes for X-Men. It cost me a lot.

Chapter 3: Dream
Dream
After graduating from College, I got a job at the subsidiary of JG Summit Philippines, Robina Corporation. I worked as the Marketing Assistant for about half a year, while working I tried to earn my Masters degree at the Asian Institute of Management, half the way I replaced my boss as the new Marketing Girl. After graduation from AIM I got promoted as Senior Manager for Marketing. I was in charge the for Marketing strategies for the whole JC Summit Philippines. After another year I got an offer from AIG, the 3rd biggest Multi National Company in the world based on Fortune Magazine. Their offer was thrice my current salary, so right there and then I grabbed the opportunity. I was asked to report to their head office at New York City, USA. After meeting the top executives, I was assigned as Marketing Manager for Las Vegas branch. After years of hard work at the states, I finally had time to go back to Philippines.
When I was in College I was the typical Not-So-Popular but “it” girl of the society. Ha! Tell me about the latest fashion and I’ll blurt it all out like a fashion guru.
My mom told me that during my early childhood stage, I was already displaying signs of being a fashionable girl.
During my second b-day, I was the one who picked up the attire I wore. If I can remember it correctly, I chose the pink straight cut pants and the shirt that has pink and white horizontal stripes. Good thing I know what color combination means early back then.
I was enamored with little dresses – balloon types and those with ruffles. People used to laugh at me because they say how on earth do my mom dresses me up. I’ll say “No, mom don’t dress me up. I do” I say it with confidence and a wide smile. But the most unforgettable line I always say back then was “unclemation” which was a twisted or baby talk for FYI. Anyway, it sounds like “for your information.” Duh!

Chapter 2: True Love
True Love?
I got home after hours of salon session. I needed to take supper because my favorite dish is served.
Supper was so great. I’ve been longing to eat laing, native Filipino vegetable dish – dried taro leaves with coconut milk. It tastes so good. I don’t know if it’s home cooked or Ash just bought it from Goldilocks. Goldilocks is a Filipino Bakeshop and Restaurant offering varieties of cakes and Filipino delicacies.
I went inside my room; by the way, the house where I’m staying is our family house. It’s located at one of the premier subdivisions in the country. As I approached my bed, I saw a bottle of Celine Dion perfume. Oh my God! It smells so good. There’s a note and it says, “I miss you so much! – Landon”
Landon, went inside my room? No he can’t, the maid won’t allow him to enter my very private place – the place where I have profound moments with myself.
In a glimpse, Manang Tinia, my yaya, went inside my room and smiled at me. She’s like saying, “you’ve got a lover”.
She starts narrating how that bottle went inside my room, right on top of my bed.
She said that Landon came over while I was at the salon, and handed the bottle to Manang Tinia. Since he wasn’t able to see me, he decided to leave a note.
How sweet of him. Landon was my office mate back when I was at Robina Corporation. He was actually my boss.
That was like pocket books-movie stories, employer falling in love with employee, boss falling in love with subordinate type. But that wasn’t our story.
Back then, I got a crush at Landon but I had a boyfriend. His name is Myron, my boyfriend since College.
I dumped Myron because he kept on insisting to be married right away after a year of work. But he can’t understand that I have a passion for work, that I needed to pursue it and that I am not ready yet for family life.
When I went to AIG, Landon got my number and e-mail but he said it was all for business.
Landon is typical handsome young executive, but back then he has no eyes for me. He’s been dating a lot of girls. Take note not just ordinary girls but super models. They even go out on a regular basis.
He has his own life and I have my own.
Until one time, I was already at the States, my sister called me and said that there was this guy named Landon who called the other day and asked if she could talk to me but too late, I am far away from home.
But that didn’t end there. He e-mailed me, he asked where I am. We e-mailed each other everyday. We even chatted over the net. Until one time, he told me that he has a business trip right where I was and he will be visiting me. I was shocked because during that time, I have an American boyfriend.
After a week, he called me at the office and told me that he was at the airport and that he needed to get my address because he had no place to stay.
He stayed for one week at a hotel near my work. He fetches me everyday, and when he got back home, he calls me everyday. I broke up with Neil because I realized there’s no spark. I realized that our relationship won’t work anymore. We have a lot of differences.
During one of my conversations to Landon, I finally revealed that I had an boyfriend and that I broke up with the guy a week after he came.
After a month, Landon filed for a week leave and went straight at my place. On that moment, I felt that he loves me so much.
By this time, Landon is now at Nestle and he’s the Senior Marketing Manager.
He said that he’ll be assigned at Taiwan and that he will not leave until I don’t come home.
I wasn’t supposed to come home. But after my parents insisted that I take care of the family investments and properties, I decided to take a leave. For how long, maybe for two to three months. Anyway, I’ve been darn so tired working day in and day out.
At that moment, I froze and I found myself reminiscing about how I reached who and what I am righ now.

Chapter 1: LRT Station
LRT Station
Suddenly I can hear toot sound. I know it’s my phone. I’ve got a new message. The message tone of my phone can get anyone’s attention.
I got quite embarrassed because a lot of people are looking at me especially here at the LRT.
I’ll just pretend that I am not the owner of that scandalous cell phone. I’ll just pretend that the volume of my ipod is very loud that I wasn’t able to hear the toot sound.
By the way, I’ll be going to eat lunch at Gateway and grab something for my niece. This has been my ritual ever since I got back from the States.
It’s a sort of a reward for every good investment and business I had.
I glance at my left, girls from Miriam are giggling, after hearing how my phone created a scandal. They can’t get over it. There was also this maniac looking guy with a beard who’s looking at me. Oh my God!
What if he thinks that I am rich and that my phone is the new Motorola V3x.
Obviously, my phone is Motorola, because they’re the only one with that toot sound.
‘Okay Shylle, don’t look suspicious, don’t look at anyone, they don’t know you and they may not even know that you own a V3x.
Ha! Here I go again trying to console my own self. I can’t bring out my phone yet. Maybe I’ll just open the message when I get to Gateway.
A lot of guys, girls, gays, and even so called MMMM are looking at me. FYI MMMM stands for matandang mayamang madaling mamatay in my language it’s an acronym used for old rich who will die soon and who young women likes.
Let me guess why they’re suddenly all eyes on me.
1. Because of the phone humiliation experience or
2. Because of my very outrageous fashion for today?
Early this morning I decided to wear this outrageous beaded light turquoise half dress with a lace on the bottom. It’s really nice and I paired it with my Lucite dangling earrings.
My sister said it’s nice and she even asked if she could have it. Unfortunately after her pregnancy, she gained 15 pounds and she is having a hard time losing all those maternity fats. Anyway, she’s starting to go to the gym and she hired an instructress who’ll help her bring back her shape. Take Note: She had perfect curves before.
‘Anonas station’
Okay after a few minutes I heard the train announcer announcing where I am. I’ll just wait for about five minutes ‘til I get down and read the controversial message.
I paired my outfit with this nice slippers I bought in the states for twenty bucks only.
It was a great save because it looks like a Prada but it’s not.
‘Araneta Station’
At last, I am on my destination, but I have to walk fast because a lot of people are going out of the train, I don’t want to be stuck and feel like a bread-filling… it’s so ironic that not just cars experience terrible traffic in the Philippines but we have the so-called ‘people-traffic jam’.
I got inside Taco Bell ordered burritos and a bottomless drink.
Finally, I had the chance to check out my phone and see the message. It’s from an anonymous person, who could this be? “Shylle, meet us at Starbucks Katipunan. Will you be available on Saturday at 7PM, we miss you so much – and before I could read who the sender is, the lady just called out my number and I needed to approach her before she thinks that I am hearing impaired.
Okay, back to my phone… Menu… Messages…Text Messages… The message with the unknown sender or senders was-Edztuh.”
Oh my God! It’s them – my College Barkada.
Okay, it’s been twenty minutes before the thought of seeing them sunk in my mind. I almost forgot that I am at TACO Bell and that I am eating my favorite mouth watering burrito.
My burrito seem very blunt today. Maybe it’s because of that message.
I have a get together on Saturday at 7PM. My natural shopaholic a.k.a. Fashionistah instinct is on the go…
After lunch at Taco Bell, I went to Bread Talk and bought some cinnamon bread for Lyla, my 5 years old niece.
Lyla has this amazing brown soft locks. It’s like Goldilocks, but hers is brown and not blonde. Lyla’s dad, Dan is half Italian, half Irish. Obviously, her mom Ashley, my sissy, is a Filipina.
Dan and Ashley met at France during one of Ashley’s business trip. They were both enjoying their cup of coffees and suddenly it rained. They needed to go inside the coffee shop. Dan opened the door for Ash they looked at each others eyes and there was a spark that bind them together. They’ve been together for one and half years as boyfriends and they got married in Italy.
Wow! What a lovely romance. I often think about their happily ever after – fairy tale like love story and I just wonder how will I ever have that kind of story to tell my children or even my great grand children.
It’s 3 PM and I’m on my way home. Mang Lito, our old good family driver fetched me. I was waiting for a cab but after thirty minutes, I can’t even see one, so I decided to call my sister and asked her if she could send the driver here at the mall to pick me up and bring me home. Gateway is about twenty minutes away from home, good thing Mang Lito is at my sister’s office at Ortigas and it’s just about fifteen minutes away.
Yes, heard it right. Just fifteen minutes away. After knowing that he’ll be fetching me, he drove the car as fast as he could. Mang Lito is such a kind man.
Mang Lito is with the family since I was a little kid. I’ve heard and witnessed a lot of stories of heroism about him. He’s a father of three and all his kids were able to graduate from College through his diligence. Now, that all his kids are grown up already and not to mention – professionals, they could not stop him from being a good provider for their mom and the whole family. But that don’t serve as an excuse for them to just stay around the house and be bums. They are also as persevering as their dad.
What I like best about Mang Lito is the way he greets me “Gooood Mor’neng po mam!” and that goes with his ever reliable and cheering smile.
Today is Thursday, I need to prepare for our get together on Saturday. So I changed for a simpler outfit and I went straight to the nearest David’s Salon. I asked Mang Lito to fetch Ash and come back for me.
I’ve been three days here in Manila and I haven’t bought a car yet. Good thing my sister and the family have lots of cars--- about five, a BMW Roadster, a red Ferrari, a Ford Explorer, a pink Honda jazz and the new family car, Toyota high ace van.
I went inside David’s and asked for a new hair color and hair cut. I was told to sit for a moment. I don’t know any stylist. It was three years since I last came here. I was browsing this local magazine when I noticed that the fashion here in Manila is really delayed. Take note: people here still like those pointed shoes. Well in fact, in the states, it has long been out of the scene.
The receptionists called out my name. She introduced me to their top stylist, Janet. Janet looks great. Her cut is so nice, a long shag and the color is so black. I like it. She is wearing a very hip attire –stretch green corduroy pants with a pink ribbon and for her top is a yellow polo shirt with sequins on the hem line. Not just that, her shoes is so gorgeous, a pink satin peep toe heels. Maybe she got it at Otto Tootsie Plohound.
We will click. I told myself. I chose chestnut brown and a short bob. I asked her opinion and she told me that I’d rather have a long bob. So, I trusted her being my present hair guru.
We chatted about my outfit. She said that I look like someone who came from the States. I asked her why. She said that even celebrities here don’t wear what I am wearing. I was just wearing this yellow v-neck shirt, I bought from Mossimo and the black shorts take note mini shorts I bought from American Eagle Outfitters. I matched it wth my purple flats. But what stunned her was my bag. A Gold and white Canvas big bag from Louis Vuitton which costs around $3,400
After being quite bored, because I needed to wait for thirty minutes before my hair absorbs all those hair damaging chemicals, and I almost read all the local magazines, I just asked for a manicure and pedicure. My nails are dull looking and I needed to revive them.
Suddenly I can hear toot sound. I know it’s my phone. I’ve got a new message. The message tone of my phone can get anyone’s attention.
